Perfectly Precise Portmanteau

A collection of two words from two languages, RAMERAKI is a portmanteau that perfectly captures the precise embodiment of what this space is about. It's a sprinkle of all the influences that impact everyday life: faith, family, and a bit of (creative) fun. What you’ll find here lives at the intersection of joyful chaos and creative expression, captured and shared as it unfolds.

rame

The first word, ramé, comes from a Balinese word that describes a lively, chaotic, yet joyful atmosphere. It's the kind of energy that feels familiar to anyone living life together under one roof, and most certainly can describe parenting in a nutshell.

meraki

The second word, μεράκι (meraki), comes from a Greek word that describes how something is created with soul, love, or to put a piece of yourself into your work, very similar to describing a "labor of love." It’s the idea that any meaningful work carries the impressions of that person who made it. This makes it shaped more by intention rather than perfection.

RAME + MERAKI

Together ramé and meraki point to the spirit behind the work shown here: art and stories that grow out of shared moments, curiosity, and the process of creating something together, in whatever form or fashion feels right at the time.

Sometimes it's back to the ol' drawing board, even if it's literally a drawing board.

Exploring The Act of ART

Creating is a core tenant of the human condition. "Art" is simply one of the most natural ways that this impulse shows itself. The word itself comes from the Latin ars, meaning skill or craft, and over time it came to describe the many ways an activity requires a level of technical skill or ability. We've come to associate this skill with perfection, but that's all there is to it. At RAMERAKI, we prefer to look at perfection through its Latin origins of perficere, which means something more along the lines of "to complete" or "bring to an end." In this way, creation is more about the creating.

At RAMERAKI, we've always seemed to be drawn to a handful of expressive art mediums. They’re the mediums we return to again and again... not because they’re the most impressive, but because they invite exploration and expression.

The Importance of creativity

Creativity itself isn’t limited to finished work or polished skill. It shares the same root word as the word create, yet it’s often the first thing we silence by comparing ourselves to others or deciding we haven’t reached some imagined level of “good enough.” In doing that, we end up stepping away from something deeply desire as human, even if we don't realize it.

RAMERAKI exists to encourage creating without that pressure. It’s a space for work that values meaning, style, and expression over technical perfection. It's also for ideas that are worth sharing simply because they were made with a certain level of intention and care.
